  1. What is MyTherapySession.com?
MyTherapySession.com is a new and innovative user-directed resource for emotional health care and wellness, developed by Dr. Brent R. Coyle, a board-certified psychiatrist with over 20 years clinical experience. Through the use of various online assessments and psycho-educational learning modules, our mission is to provide hope, help and education to individuals with various emotional health care concerns, including suicide and other crisis situation, stress, depression, abuse, insomnia, self-esteem and goal setting, anger, loss, guilt and shame, addictions, nicotine dependence, diet and exercise, eating disorders, and more.

  2. Why does MyTherapySession.com exist?
The root word for Doctor is "Teacher". Modern medicine seems to have little time or patience for "teaching" and it seems the practice of medicine is getting faster every day, suggesting that unless we get creative in offering education, it will be getting worse. MyTherapySession.com is a creative solution to this problem using partnered education to supplement your psychotherapeutic growth, or even if psychotherapy per se is not available or feasible for you in some way. MyTherapySession.com is a way to get vital medical education that is critical for effective medical care.

  3. How is MyTherapySession.com different?
MyTherapySession.com is different than other educational resources because we do not simply offer a diagnosis. We encourage the user to look at underlying issues and determine reasons and causes behind the diagnosis, as well as provide coping skills and management tools. Our unique method of teaching appeals to all learning styles and provides the viewer with visual and auditory learning opportunities, note-taking opportunities, repetition, breaks, discussion, and practice. These multi-modal learning tools ensure maximum understanding, comprehension, and retention of the material presented.

  4. Who do I contact if I am having an acute emotional crisis or emergency?
Absolutely no clinical care is provided at this site. This is informational and "self help" only so if you have a clinical need, you will need to contact your own therapist, mental health center, primary care provider or your closest emergency room. Dr. Coyle will not accept calls of a clinical nature.

  5. Who can benefit from the programs?
Our programs are designed to benefit a broad range of individuals and organizations, including: concerned caregivers, distressed individuals, therapists and other health care providers, employee assistance programs, law enforcement, federal and state programs, primary care or emergency room settings, hospitals, community mental health, colleges and universities, resource centers, churches, and many others.

  6. Who developed the programs?
Almost all of our current topics were developed by, and are presented by, Brent R. Coyle, M.D. (the one exception is the Friendship presentation by Carol Ann Coyle, Ph.D. (Click here for more information about Dr. Coyle.)

  7. What products or topics are covered?
Through our psycho-educational learning modules, we can provide you assistance, and hope, for the following emotional health concerns: Suicide and other crisis situations, self-harm, abusive relationships, insomnia, stress, anxiety and depression, self-esteem and goal setting, anger, loss, guilt and shame, friendships, solitude, pain, and assertiveness. We also offer comprehensive approaches for addictions, smoking cessation/ nicotine dependence, weight loss and exercise, trauma, abuse, and eating disorders. (Click here for a complete list of our current topics.)

  8. What formats are the video presentations in?
Our topics are offered through multiple delivery methods, including: instant streaming videos (Adobe FLV Flash), DVDs, computer downloads (F4V Flash and MP4), and iPod and Unbox downloads.

  9. What topic should I start with?
If you are uncertain about what topic to begin with, we highly encourage you to begin by completing the MyTherapySession.com "MyNeeds" Assessment, which will ultimately direct you to issues that my be of concern (Click here to view available assessments). With that in mind, please be advised that your safety always comes first! True crisis situations belong in the emergency room or equivalent, not with on-line education. If you feel it is safe and appropriate to proceed, you may first wish to consider viewing the "Safety" topics that apply; those three topics include Choosing Life: Safety in Emotional Crisis, Safety From Current Abuse and (Safety from) Self-Harm. Secondly, we recommend you begin with the Self-Esteem and Goal Setting (SEGS) series, since it contains so many of the fundamentals of success. But, Stress, Anxiety and Depression or Insomnia are also good places to start, if applicable. If addiction issues are present, you might benefit from starting with the Comprehensive Addictions series, because it integrates self-esteem and goal setting issues with addictions. Because we highly encourage partnership throughout our programs, Friendship might also be a good start, but since these are only suggestions, please feel free to go directly to whichever topic seems right for you. (Click here for a complete list of our current topics.)

  10. When can I do this?
Our learning modules are designed for immediate access, and therefore designed to be completed any time, when you want to, at your convenience, and at your own pace. The content is available when you need it, and as often as you choose. The programs are designed to initiate and facilitate emotional health care. They are ideal for preparing for an appointment with a therapist or counselor, or for follow up after an appointment, as well as any time in between! Most of all, they can be done now, with no waiting and no appointment necessary!

  11. Where can I do this?
Our learning modules are designed to be completed virtually anywhere! With our streaming video format, our programs are accessible anywhere there is a computer and internet connection available, including the privacy and comfort of your own home, a trusted or concerned friend/family member's home, the workplace, a therapist or counselor's office, the local public library, and many more. With our DVD format, and the use of a portable DVD player or laptop computer, the "where" and "when" to view our programs is endless! (Other available formats include digital downloads, and iPod and Unbox downloads.) Most of all, our modules can be completed with little (or no) travel expenses and/or travel time.

  12. Why aren't the presentations free?
Most importantly, because this is not entertainment. This is serious medical content that is vitally important. Health care has major gaps that need development and Dr. Coyle believes the psycho-educative and psychotherapeutic needs are among the greatest challenges. The research and development (R & D) of these "products" realistically must "compete" with the pharmaceutical "industry". If we ever hope to dispel or even argue the belief that a pill can cure everything, we need to empirically prove it. Intuitively, we might believe that partnership and education are much more likely to be determined the most meaningful factors for effective change and healing for addictions, trauma, abuse, diet, exercise and most other behavior change challenges, but it must be proven then the structure further improved just like any other therapeutic intervention. Furthermore, our human nature and scientific data consistently find that we devalue things that are free. We cannot afford to devalue this information; it is central to health and will change and potentially save your life; we will never cross the legitimacy threshold by giving this information away. In addition, the presentations, site preparation, maintenance and technical support requirements are a tremendously time intensive and therefore expensive proposition. It was Dr. Coyle's desire to avoid pharmaceutical support and third partyadvertisement to lend greatest credibility to the content. With that being said, we have also structured the company on spiritual, altruistic and service-driven principles so we have sought to offer the presentations at the lowest possible, yet business viable, cost to allow almost anyone access to it. Cost is, of course, further lowered by sharing the cost with a therapeutic mentor or other educational partner.

  13. Why is mentorship or partnership encouraged so much?
It is impossible to accurately see ourselves as others do, therefore, all of us can gain from an additional "observing" view of ourselves. We can also learn better when we discuss and share ideas with others. (Of course, with a well-trained and competent therapist if possible.) Partnering with another individual is also a great way to share the cost of the presentations but perhaps, most importantly, for adding depth to learning and a mission and purpose to peoples' lives. If you have been healed, it is natural for you to wish that same healing for those around you. Mentoring another through their own struggles further consolidates the material for you, helps them, and potentially gives the mentor a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in doing so.

  14. Do I need a therapist for working through the presentations?
Having a therapist for this work is always recommended, however, we realize that is not always possible and may not be feasible for many reasons. Having a healthy partner work the programs with you is better, but, ultimately, you can still do it on your own and receive tremendous benefits.

  15. Why not participate in groups?
Indeed, why not! Groups are perhaps the best way to use the presentations, as there are even more opportunities for discussion, sharing and learning. Of course, having a trained therapist or facilitator greatly enhances the potential benefit when groups are working on this content. The cost of participating in groups would also significantly reduce the cost per person, making group participation financially beneficial, too.

  16. Is an evaluation required?
Since this is not clinical care in any way, no, an evaluation is not required. We do offer various assessment tools which will assist you in screening for, organizing and prioritizing the areas that you might wish to work on (Click here for a list of available assessment tools). These tools also offer the benefit of being able to print out the results in order to take to your emotional health care or primary care provider, giving them more and better organized information, so you might receive the best possible care.

  17. Why is there a spiritually inclusive segment to many of the tracks?
Based on the research done by Dr. Coyle, it was found that most people would like to have the option of including a spiritual component to their emotional health care. More information about why and what kind of spiritually inclusive content is offered can be found in Dr. Coyle's "Background" video (found on the About Us page), where he explains these things in greater detail.

  18. Are you representing or "recruiting" for any religion?
Absolutely not! Any and all spiritually inclusive content is intended to be general, inclusive and "universal", therefore representative of a wide variety of faiths. The only disadvantage of offering only this general, inclusive and universal content is that what is offered here is only "the basics", and any further spiritual growth and development in your own area of interest will need to take place on your own or, ideally, with a trusted spiritual advisor or spiritually-inclusive therapist of your choice. As the site develops, there may be offerings from particular faith groups that may be of interest to the public (if those are ultimately placed on the site, they will be clearly identified as representing that particular faith group). Dr. Coyle is fully supportive of the American Psychiatric Association's ETHICAL POSITION against coercive influence toward or against any specific religious belief system.

  19. What if I don't want to include a spiritual component, or am offended by it?
In general, psychiatry and psychology have probably more been in error by excluding spiritual content, having missed the needs and desires of many people in doing so, however, our video-based, informational, and self-directed methods finally allow for the spiritually inclusive material to be offered at the very end of any topic, therefore, it is in your complete control to exclude that content if desired. We encourage you to simply stop the presentations if you are at all uncomfortable with content of a spiritually inclusive nature.

  20. When I click on a supporting document or journal, why can't I open it?
Most of our supporting documents are in Adobe PDF format. In order to view them, you need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer (For Windows users, click here for a free download; for Macintosh users, click here.)

  21. How do I clear or update my shopping cart?
If you wish to clear a shopping cart, simply replace the number in the quantity box to "0" for the item(s) you want to remove and then click "Update Cart". Likewise, to update the cart, change the number in the quantity box to the amount you actually want and then click "Update Cart". (For example if you have two copies of Anger displayed and wish to purchase only one, just click in the quantity box and replace the "2" with a "1", followed by the "Update Cart" button.)

  22. Why can't I view any of the site videos, product movie trailers, or streaming videos?
Our site videos, product movie trailers, and streaming videos are delivered in Adobe FLV Flash format. In order to view them, you need to have the latest Adobe Flash player installed (available for free download by clicking here.)

  23. When viewing an online video, why does it continue to show "buffering"?
Ultimately, the quality of the videos will depend on how quickly you are able to transfer or "stream" the information and your computer quality. The transfer speed is mostly based on the speed of your Internet connection. A fast connection to the Internet (such as T1, DSL, or cable modem) will greatly enhance your experience in viewing our video content. If your connection is slower (a 28 or 56k modem, for example) you may need to wait several minutes before the video starts playing, and you will most likely experience lower quality sound and video, due to the current limitations of the streaming media technology. Fortunately, most public libraries have faster connections, or you may be able to find other sources for faster connections.

  24. Who do I contact if I am having a technical problem?
Our technical support email is support@mytherapysession.com, or you can call toll-free during regular business hours at 888-868-3191.

  25. Can I break up a presentation series to participate at a later time?
You are welcome and encouraged to participate at whatever pace is right for you. For maximum benefit, we recommend you complete each program, beginning at the first session and working though the presented sequence. There seems to be some evidence from the professional literature that working intently on a project is more likely to meet with success since we all tend to get more distracted with other things than we sometimes plan on. We do not recommend stopping in the middle of a presentation series, but it is completely in your control to do so if you wish.

  26. Can I drop out of a topic?
You can, but we highly encourage you not to. Not only will your benefits decrease from not viewing the whole topic you have chosen, but "dropping" out of treatment also lowers the statistical effectiveness of the program.

  27. Can I get my money back?

  31. I am currently working with a therapist and am intrigued by what MyTherapySession.com offers. How would it add to what I am currently doing?
Our video sessions can greatly enhance the educational content and organization of several areas of interest. The sessions are short enough that they can also easily be contained in a "therapeutic hour", and still allow ample opportunity for discussion. The electronic format allows you to pause, repeat, etc., as much as you like, and the accompanying product journals greatly enhance your ability to maximally organize and capture the content. Outcome measures are also offered to help you objectively know if you are improving or not, so that you can change your approach when/if you feel you are getting stuck. (Click here for a list of current outcome measures.)

  32. I am a patient/client and would like to use the content of MyTherapySession.com in therapy. How would you suggest I address it with my therapist?
Our experience is that most therapists like the idea. Explain what you know about the site and give them the web address. You might also encourage them to sign up for free updates through our mailing list. Using our resources usually makes his/her job a bit easier for the time frame you are reviewing it, so that is to your therapist'’s benefit to incorporate our programs. If your therapist is resistant to the idea, you might suggest splitting the cost or even assuming the full cost yourself, if needed. Of course, you could also do this entirely on your own, as it is not at all unusual for a patient/client to read or review self help material and potentially discuss it with their therapist at some point.

  33. I am a therapist and would like to use the content of MyTherapySession.com with my patients. How would you suggest I go about doing that?
It can be done in several ways. First, if you like the streaming option and you have a computer with high-speed Internet access in your office, it is simply a matter of determining who will be responsible for the financial cost and placing your monitor so that both you and the client can see it. If you would like to have instant and permanent access to the presentations, that could be accomplished with DVDs, computer downloads, and iPod or Unbox downloads. Finally, the material could be assigned as "home work" or be viewed prior to your session at a learning station. (We welcome and appreciate you sending any additional ideas as you find them.) Again, in keeping with the reality that individuals do not tend to value things that are free, we recommend that the client/patient pay at least a portion of the cost.

  34. Do you offer multiple discounts for multiple DVD purchases?
Yes! We currently offer substantial discounts for DVD purchases in quantities of 10 or more of the same title. For more information about this program, please call 888-868-3191.

  35. Does Dr. Coyle accept new patients?
Dr. Coyle does not accept private patients. In association with his role as Medical Director of the Emotional Health and Recovery Program at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tenn., he has an acute care practice only (Inpatient, Partial Hospitalization or Intensive Outpatient). He has no outpatient practice and has no web-based practice.

  36. Will there be other presenters than Dr. Coyle?
At some point, yes, we aim to have other presenters. Because we are just building our library of topics, all current content has been developed and presented by, either Dr. Brent Coyle or Dr. Carol Ann Coyle.

  37. How could I propose a presentation for inclusion on MyTherapySession.com?
MyTherapySession, Inc. is dedicated to the provision of highest quality psycho-educational content for emotional health delivered in flexible means for maximal health impact. We hope to offer many more topics that are presented here by other professionals (in addition to Dr. Brent Coyle and Dr. Carol Ann Coyle), however we are also determined to keep those offerings at the highest possible level of quality. We are also inclined toward believing that "Science without Faith is suspect and Faith without Science is similarly suspect". Similarly, "Pills without challenge for change is suspect as is blindness and rejection of what medication might do to enhance the life changes and therapeutic challenges patients/clients face". We believe that patients/clients are generally entitled to some personal disclosure of a professional's faith system if issues related to it are part of an educational endeavor. If you are in general recognition of these guidelines, and if you are an M.D. or Ph.D. with at least 15 years of post training clinical experience and would like to prepare a self help presentation, email us at ProfessionalServices@MyTherapySession. com or send your written proposal to: My Therapy Session, Inc., P.O. Box 6185, Maryville, TN, 37802.

  38. How could I propose other outcome measures for inclusion on MyTherapySession.com?>
My Therapy Session, Inc. is dedicated to the provision of comprehensive computer-based emotional and psychological assessment, but we also honor copyright and fees assessed for the use of such measures; therefore, we only use measures without cost (public domain). If you have suggestions for inclusion of other outcome measures, please email us at ProfessionalServices@MyTherapySession.com or send your written proposal to: My Therapy Session, Inc., P.O. 39. How could I propose a research project for MyTherapySession.com?
In light of MyTherapySession.com's mission, we would like to develop as much empiric science in support of these interventions as possible; as such, we are highly motivated for further studying the tools clinically. If you have the resources and passion for conducting this research, please email your ideas and suggestions to ProfessionalServices@MyTherapySession.com or send your written proposal to: My Therapy Session, Inc., P.O. Box 6185, Maryville, TN, 37802.

  40. How can I help others and tell them about MyTherapySession.com?
We realize there are many people and organizations in close contact with people in need but do not have the structure or mission to directly provide care for those individuals. They want to help but are unsure how. For this reason, we developed our Referral Resource Service, where agencies can obtain printed materials describing the product and services of MyTherapySession.com. These printed resources can then be shared with individuals who might benefit from the services offered, or the concerned caretakers and/or potential partners in the education process. (Click here for more information about our Referral Resource service.) As an individual, you can refer MyTherapySession.com to your friends through our Tell-a-Friend service.
